Hampi
Hampi is one of India's great archaeological landscapes — a surreal boulder-strewn terrain scattered with the ruins of the Vijayanagara empire, from the intricately carved Vittala Temple to the still-active Virupaksha shrine. Sunrise from Matanga Hill over the ruins is one of South India's most photographed moments. Stays lean toward simple guesthouses and a handful of boutique heritage-style properties, keeping the focus on the ruins rather than resort comforts — a must for history lovers, photographers and anyone drawn to unusual landscapes.
ClimateDry, rocky terrain — very hot in summer, warm and pleasant in winter.
